Activity 3: Visual Expression

Introduction

A line is an extension of a dot, a line is the foundation and has potential to be anything. A line gets its character when it bends.

"The dot and the line: A Romance in lower mathematics"

The video talks about a straight line who is hopelessly in love with a dot. The dot, finding the line to be generic, stiff and conventional, turns her affections toward a wild and unkempt squiggle. The line tries to dream of greatness until he finally understands what the squiggle means, and decides to be more unconventional. Willing to do whatever it takes to win the dot's affection, the line manages to bend himself and form an angle after angle until he is nothing more than a mess of handsome sides, bends and angles. Seeing this, the dot tells the unkempt squiggle how she really feels about him, denouncing him as meaningless, undisciplined, insignificant, and out of luck. She leaves the squiggle and goes with the line, having accepted that the line has much more to offer.

Reflection

A line is a dot moving through space. Lines can be thick or thin. They can be long or short. They can be vertical, horizontal or diagonal. They can be dotted, dashed or solid. Lines can be curved or straight or combinations of both. There's an endless variety in what we think of as a line.

Line when used as borders help define a composition. Lines communicate messages when used appropriately. Purpose can vary with width or weight of the line. For example, a fine, thin curved line denotes lightness/ delicateness and minimalism.

Line is a crucial and fundamental element of design. In art & design, line is just a straight line, but the path of a dot through space and always has more length than thickness.
