LJL: FVL-2

The objective is to understand the form and colour of my capsicum and the importance of different mediums and the techniques used in order to be able to best represent our form. Keen and delicate observational skills and the love for my vegetable is what this project aims towards.

Observation and Representation

- Contour: Careful observation of the outline of my capsicum from various angles helped me ensure that my accuracy with which I drew the outline was close to perfection. Knowing that each capsicum is unique, some may have four bulges and some may have three. But that does not change the line quality because the contour of the capsicum was such.

- Volume: Some parts of the capsicum when only the contour was drawn don't really represent the 3 dimensional aspect of the round and bulgy vegetable. But when I started to observe the way the lights falls on my capsicum, the light shows that my capsicum is not only bulgy but roundish too. The best way to describe it would be that it looks like 3-4 spheres which are stretched and then intersect each other at a singular line or vertex. like a venn diagram of some sorts.

- Texture: Keen observation of how the light falls onto the smooth, fresh surface of the capsicum really brought out the texture of the capsicum to life. This to me is the most important stage as it requires keen observation. Feeling the capsicum assisted me to be able to grasp the texture that my vegetable had. It helped me create volume and capture details that identifies the object. I was able to use my sense of touch to observe each fold and elevation that it comprised of. Being able to grasp and then render the texture as it looks was the goal that I achieved here.

- Colour: Observing all the hues, and shades and all the other different tones is what tied everything together. I had to create the exact shade of the capsicum by using sap green as the base. I mixed a tad bit of most colours and had fun experimenting and going back to the palette every few minutes. The medium of colour also played a huge role here as the dry mediums helped get to almost the exact shade of the capsicum but the wet medium like watercolours were really fast to work with and highlights were easier to capture.

Visual Media

Soft pastels

- It did not give the desired look as capsicum is a fresh and shiny vegetable and soft pastels gave a very dusty appearance

- It was surely easy to blend the soft pastels and get better accuracy in terms of the colours

- Textures were not as prevalent as I would like for them to be

- I was able to render fine line quality at some places

Water colours

- Got the desired texture with bright highlights and deep, dark shadows wherever required

- Work came out neat and clean, except for a few paint spills

- Takes a long time for the wet page to dry and resulted in the paper turning and waving

- Pages got stuck together even though there was a butter paper to keep them from getting stuck to each other

Conclusions and Key Learnings

- A few things I learnt about myself is that I good with fine line quality and representing an object really well with ink and fine lines

- I do struggle with charcoal as it tends to get very messy

- Regardless of the previous point I can work really well with blending soft pastels even though it might get messy at times

- Through the little bit of DDD that I have done, I have seen a huge improvement in my overall speed and accuracy with which I can observe and sketch objects

- I am almost able to render an object if I observe it really well before hand and implement simple drawing and analyse the form first.

---

DDD is something I need to work on greatly. I have not been doing it on a daily basis. I am planning to work on it in the next semester and make it a habit. I lack consistency, I always seem to require someone who can push me everyday and remind me to do it.
