Our aim while doing this project is to be able to make variations of our designs in the vector map. While doing so, it will enhance our visual skills of composition and exploration.
Creative Process
We have been introduced to the iterative approach to idea development it means to break down a task and work on small step-by-step tasks. Looking at the whole in one go can intimidate one, but if you focus on one aspect at one time (keeping in mind the importance of time management) it can bring a very desired outcome which flows smoothly. This is very essential for any iterative approach towards idea development.
For example in these are the different variations I came up with. I had to keep the foreground and the background both in mind while thinking of the elements that would fit best together so that nothing looked out of place. I think I did a decent job of choosing the thickness, quality, colour of the lines and other elements in my vector map.
I did not use all the elements that I came up with but making friends with the unknown is important for anyone and in the world of design you can definitely not ignore that. Therefore, it is important to come up with a ton of variations.
As you can see I tried multiple permutation combinations before coming to a desired look. If I wanted I could have used all the icons I had made because technically it all went with the vibe, but it would not have looked aesthetically pleasing to most eyes.
Making all these variations digitally was a huge benefit but can also be a downside. It is a benefit because I can change a thickness or colour of multiple aspects and make a ton of copies, but at the same time doing so might make it difficult for the artist/ designer to judge and segregate that which one should I come down to. Hence, it is important to maintain an overall balance.
Visual Communication
It is really important to be able to communicate anything visually to your audience. To make them feel like they are the protagonist and that they can relate to it and making it easy for them to relate to your work is a task which I find it really difficult. Following a blue print might make it easier but making something from scratch takes a lot of planning and patience. This is something that I have learnt but i am still far away from being able to communicate my idea and thoughts visually.
I wanted to portray a map which is from 1906 but have modern elements and at the same time have rustic, ancient treasure map vibe to it. I had to shortlist and eliminate a lot of aspects, because if I did that then my map would look like I am trying too hard to achieve a mixed look that would not be pleasing to look at.
Conclusion
- I seem to struggle with moving forward in the initial stages of my work because I did not really seem to like how my pre work turned out. It seemed very simple. But I am glad that it was simple because it gave me a ton of opportunity and a lot of elements that I was able to play in the next few stages of my work.
- I seem to get confused while shortlisting and judging my various permutation combinations. Seeking the help of my teachers helps me relax, as they motivate me to stay confused. In a very weird way it seems to keep my head high and I feel optimistic very soon after a feedback from them.
- I had difficulty in giving a creative and technical reason for some of my choices. I went with my gut feeling and if I had the time I could have definitely been a little more ambitious and had a greater outcome.
Key learnings and realisations
- The addition of colour at the end really gave that boost and brought out all those elements that I felt needed to be highlighted.
- I love getting lost in the process. I need to be able to realise at what point that it can be harmful, because I might have a negative outcome.
- Reaching out for feed-forwards and having your work to be rejected is a beautiful thing. Making mistakes is the best thing you can do until you realise what mistake you did and how you can avoid it next time.
